Lucy and Malakai’s story – Take the Leap 2022 experience
Being a parent can be a challenging yet fulfilling journey, and I learned this firsthand with my son Malakai. He is my one and only child, a kind-hearted and considerate young boy who, like many kids, struggled with change. School was a source of anxiety for him, affecting not only his education but also his social interactions. As a parent, I was determined to help him overcome these challenges, and that is when we found the Take the Leap programme by Leap.
Before joining the programme, Malakai often found it difficult to manage his emotions. Frustration would lead to expressions of anger, as he struggled to communicate his feelings effectively. His sensitivity and caring nature were often overshadowed by his reactions to these emotions.
The impact of the Take the Leap programme on Malakai was remarkable. He began to handle conflict with a newfound ease, learning to identify his triggers and address them in a more thoughtful manner. The programme gave him the tools to open up and resolve issues rather than bottling them up. His confidence flourished, and he approached his emotions with a new perspective, even if it meant confronting his fears and vulnerabilities.
Thanks to the programme, Malakai also developed strong friendships. His willingness to help others and his presence in their lives mirrored my own values, and it was heartwarming to see his peers appreciate the beautiful qualities in him that I had always seen.
This past year brought unexpected challenges, as Malakai faced the loss of his grandparents. Adjusting to such significant changes was especially tough for him, given his aversion to change. However, the skills he gained from the Take the Leap programme helped him navigate these emotional and traumatic times with resilience.
Leap’s Take the Leap programme has proven to be a blessing for young individuals like Malakai, especially during the transition to secondary school. It is particularly beneficial for those dealing with anxiety, as it equips them with tools to navigate this pivotal phase in their lives. While the programme has been incredibly impactful, I cannot help but wish it were accessible to more schools and a larger number of students.
The positive changes in my son’s well-being and communication skills are undeniable, all thanks to the Take the Leap programme. It has empowered him to navigate the world as he grows, offering him a foundation of skills and confidence. As a parent, I am immensely grateful for the transformation I have witnessed in Malakai. If future programmes tailored for young people arise, I would eagerly enrol Malakai without a second thought. After all, his journey with Take the Leap has proven that with the right guidance and tools, he can truly conquer any challenges that come his way.
