Improving Prospects (IP) is Leap’s longest running community programme in London. It is designed to give young people aged 15-21 an insight into the causes of conflict as well as to develop their capabilities to manage it.

On Wednesday 14 July 2021 guests representing the Metropolitan Police, community groups, funders and company sponsors, joined our online Breaking the cycle learning event where the team presented its two-year longitudinal report with programme graduates and referral partners. Attendees had an opportunity to learn more how Improving Prospects has evolved during the pandemic and the team’s strategic plans to support young people across London.

The reports outlines top six outcomes for young people

of young people had positively influenced their peers and others in their community

of young people agreed their confidence increased in managing conflict

of young people saw an improvement in their relationships with the person they were in conflict with prior to the course

The report captured the shared insights from both practitioners and young people and show us that Improving Prospects is making a huge positive impact on the lives of young people and youth practitioners across London. Yet, we know more needs to be done so that we can reach more young people and respond to the emerging needs from the past 18 months. To achieve this, we plan to take these insights to refine the programme in three ways. They are to:

  1. Scale up Leap’s progressions support offer to young people
  2. Strengthen relationships with referral organisations and young people
  3. Create opportunities for Leap graduates to become influencers and role models in their local community

Thank you to all the young people who participated to this study and to Rachel Batten for the hours spent interviewing young people and referral partners, gathering the data and producing the internal report for staff.

Thank you also to those Trusts and Foundations and others that have funded Improving Prospects across the three years. Your support has enabled the team to better support some of the most vulnerable young people in our society.
